Recovery Help On A Lab top?

So i recently bought a Gateway Laptop about last year from a local "Used Laptop Shop" Which they also installed a self recovery program so i can restore my laptop to factory default settings. But recently i have been having A LOT of problems with my laptop but the main one is when i went to go and format to start fresh i would open the Gateway Recovery Manager(In and Out of safe mode) and then a window would pop up saying that the program has stopped working and continued to do so multiple times, i tried to de-fragment my computer,disk check,disc cleanup, virus scan (In safe mood and out) also tried to do a system restore to an earlier time. But with all no success i can not open my Recovery Manager and feel as if my Laptop is doomed to be a piece of junk in the garbage soon, anyone got any idea's on how i could get it to stop popping up saying that it is "stopped working"?
