How to set up a new laptop?

So soon I'm going to be purchasing a new laptop online, but I'm not sure of the steps of getting everything set up (virus software, updates, etc). If anybody could tell me the proper way of going about doing that or posting a link with an easy-to-follow step-by-step guide, I'd be very grateful.
